The University’s goal was to create a venue where intimate communication surmounts physical size. The auditorium’s capacity requires integrated sound systems and room acoustics focused on intelligibility for spoken word, as well as integrated theatrical and architectural lighting. Visual reference to texts and speakers was accommodated by rear-projection image magnification screens that compensate for viewing distances.

The lighting of the audience chamber uses recessed ceiling fixtures, decorative sconces, and lighting of vertical surfaces. The three-story, 76,000 sq. ft. main lobby is illuminated by glowing wall sconces, art lighting and pendant fixtures creating a luminous environment.

Apeiro Design (formerly Auerbach Pollock Friedlander) also designed the building’s broadcast center, supporting local production of the facility’s programs for air on BYUtv which is carried by 500 cable outlets, numerous satellite providers and via internet streaming. The center includes a 2,000 sq. ft. shooting studio, two production control rooms, two audio live mix/post production rooms, voice over room, teleprompter room, senior video, robotic camera operator center, media transfer room, master control/transmission room, four edit rooms, and a television technical operations center supporting the campus.
