University of California, Berkeley - School of Law South Addition
A stunning addition was inserted into the courtyard of the existing University of California, Berkeley Law School with a central dramatic transparent four-story stair, courtyards and roof top deck. The approach to legal education has changed significantly over the years and a shift to more intimate learning environments has occurred.
The lighting for the project supports a more intimate approach particularly in the cafe, lounge, reading rooms, library and seminar classrooms.
The site lighting approach selectively applies layers of light to accommodate varying outdoor events from graduation ceremonies and alumni cocktail parties on the roof deck to group study sessions in the courtyards. A combination of backlit glass-block pavers, handrail lighting, cove lighting and pole mounted lighting creates depth and interest for the outdoor environments.
Intelligent lighting controls and a seamless integration of lighting and architecture were applied to the project accommodating the growth of the school and creating a more dynamic learning environment.
