Len Auerbach Receives USITT Distinguished Achievement Award in Architecture

S. Len Auerbach, FASTC, IALD, MIES, USITT Distinguished Achievement Award

We’re proud to announce that Len Auerbach has been honored with the USITT Distinguished Achievement Award in Architecture, recognizing his exceptional contributions to theatre consulting, architectural lighting design and the broader architecture community.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Len’s work has helped shape performance venues and audience experiences around the world. His unique approach blends a deep foundation in architecture with hands-on expertise in scenic and theatrical lighting design, resulting in innovative, highly collaborative solutions that have influenced industry standards.

Len earned both his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Drama from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), where he specialized in Scenic & Lighting Design and Theatre Architecture. Early in his career, he worked in New York and at leading regional theatres, including serving as resident lighting designer at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis.

In 1968, Len joined the renowned acoustical and theatrical consulting firm Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN). Just a few years later, in 1972, he co-founded Piacentini/Auerbach which became Auerbach Pollock Friedlander/Auerbach Glasow, a firm that would evolve into what is known today as Apeiro Design.

Throughout his consulting career, Len has contributed to the design of hundreds of venues worldwide, collaborating with prominent architects and clients while often advancing new technological standards in the field. His work is defined not only by technical excellence, but by a spirit of curiosity, ingenuity and partnership.

Great design is really about collaboration and communication between everyone involved.

S. Leonard Auerbach, FASTC, IALD, MIES, Founder & Emeritus

Beyond his project work, Len has been deeply engaged in the professional community. He’s a founding member of the American Society of Theatre Consultants (ASTC) and has been actively involved with the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) and the International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT). He also takes particular pride in his role in developing and supporting the Theatre Architecture Studio at Carnegie Mellon University, helping to inspire and mentor future generations of designers.

This award is a testament to Len’s enduring impact on the industry and his lifelong commitment to advancing the art and science of theatre design.
