The center has supported the development of many of the country’s leading actors, designers, writers and musicians. The 199-seat theatre thrived, but over many years of use finishes, seating, systems and equipment became worn and outdated.

In 2013, just over 40 years after its founding, Apeiro
Design joined with Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects to undertake a NYC Department of Development and Construction-managed renovation of the theatre. New seating with improved comfort, sightlines and ADA accessibility was created. New rigging, lighting and audio-video systems were designed to support an expanded stage. Artists’ backstage facilities were also improved. The successful project was completed in 2017 and opened by Borough President Eric Adams.
